The Terracotta Bride is a short fantasy novellette that follows a girl who died very young, Siew Tsin, and who was married off to a rich man by a dead great uncle when she arrived in Chinese Hell where spirits of the dead stay until they are ready to move on and be reincarnated. Wealthier spirits bribe officials to avoid moving on since being reincarnated requires that you forget everything from your past life and what makes you you.
So Siew Tsin is marking time as a second wife to a wealthy man when he brings home yet another wife, this one a kind of terracotta golem that's fashioned to look like a woman. Siew Tsin ends up being the outsider looking on as the new bride threatens to upend the order of things just by her very existence. It was somewhat sad but I found the ending sweet and uplifting as Siew Tsin learns to move on after her disappointment.
